Types of Paper

We'd like to breakdown the different types of paper for you, so you can choose the best option for your customers and projects. We are the paper people and want to make sure you know just how many different types of paper there is to choose from, and what works best for you.

Business Papers

Copy here of an overview of business papers. We can actually bullet point the rest out (as you can see below), or even nest another section of tabs in. I can work with Jess on the design of these tabs and see if I can translate them onto the page. Below would be a scrolling form, and below that are nested tabs. I would maybe argue the scrolling form. We want to say that they will learn about Grades, Carbonless, Specialty, and the brands and uses for paper below so they know to scroll.

Business Grades

  • Bond: Writing paper. Bond is strong, durable paper especially suitable for electronic printing and used in office printers including copiers and desktop printers.
  • Laser: Laser is a smoother sheet designed for better toner adhesion. It has a better formation compared to copier bond so text and images are sharp.
  • Ink Jet: Specifically designed for inkjet printing, this paper as a surface starch sizing to handle the liquid ink that will sit on the surface of the sheet. The starched surface is usually one-sided.
  • Premium Sulphite: Paper made from wood fiber. Suphite papers come in a multitude of colors and finishes and typically have matching cover weights and envelopes for a full identity system.
  • 25% - 100% Cotton Rag: Made using cotton liners or cotton from used cloth (rags) as the primary material, sheets with cotton content are also known as rag paper. Important documents are often printed on cotton paper, because it is known to last many years without deterioration.

Carbonless: paper that has been chemically coated with microcapsules that contain image-forming dyes. When pressure is applied to the carbonless set, the microcapsules break and the dyes are transferred to lower sheet(s). This allows duplicate copies to be produced with the use of a carbon sheet.

Self-Contained Carbonless: two complete coatings on the upper surface of a self-contained carbonless sheet allows you to use any uncoated sheet as the top ply of the set.

Speciality Business

  • Bristol: stiff, heavy papers: characterized by builk and strength; includes index and printing bristols.
  • Index: a stiff but not thick card stock with a smooth finish. It is a popular choice for business reply cards sent in the direct mail or inserted into magazines. It is also used for some postcards and index cards.
  • Pressure Sensitive: papers with a permanently tacky adhesive which adhere to a surface by contact and applied pressure.
  • Synthetics: sheets typically manufactured using synthetic resin derived from petroleum. Its appearance is similar to that of regular paper made from wood pulp but with durability and characteristics similar to those of plastic film.

Are you ready for Paper School?

While paper may seem relatively simple, there is a true science to selecting the right paper when developing project specifications. An uninformed decision can result in unhappy clients, unreadable text and unimpressed customers.

At the Clampitt Paper School, attendees learn the basics of paper manufacturing and economics, the differences between coated and uncoated stocks, industry terminology and much more. Classes are provided every quarter in Dallas and each session lasts only a few hours. (We’ll even provide lunch).
